Graphics project…Part IV (final installment!).
The finish line is in sight…now we’re abandoning abstraction and going purely for quality representation. Make the model look good. Play with depth, perspective, shading, shadows. Speculate on scale and possible habitation.
Here, I’m trying to decide on the best perspective during class:
A few basic axonometrics. Getting a feel for the forms and voids I’ve created. What kind of hatching should I use? Thickness of lineweights? Where will the deep shadows reside?
Here are the final drawings (blue represents section cut):
So there you have it…a basic analytical and graphical exercise…fun for the whole family! Seriously, though, I think this exercise did more than just improve our rendering ability…it helped drive home the importance of an iterative process. We all talk about the logic of design and express the desire to see a progression of thought rather than the “divine idea” that Uncle Wright made so famous, but this ignores the middle ground where abstraction (or inspiration) and logic can coexist. Layering abstraction into logical design should be encouraged. That being said, I’ve found it very difficult to mix the two. I lean toward logic always. Grids, proportions, patterns, protection of the “whole.” These are all my defaults.
Hope you enjoyed it.
